Cryptocoryne Undulata is a beautiful but often overlooked aquarium plant. Native to Sri Lanka and Thailand, this lovely variety features textured leaves that can display a mixed palette of dark green and reddish-brown hues. Like most live aquatic plants, its colors are influenced by light and nutrients, making it somewhat of a mystery that unfolds as the tank matures. Appearance aside, it is a forgiving species and is often considered a beginner-friendly plant. Like other crypts, it is able to adapt to a variety of water conditions, but may experience melt in inital stages.
Don't let crypt melt deter you. Plant yours in nutrient-dense aquasoil or use root tabs if you have sand and leave it alone. Once established, this family of plants is one of the hardiest around and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They're a great choice for midground placement in planted tanks and can fill out backgrounds of nano aquariums nicely. Propagation is easy when the plant matures and can be done by gently separating baby plants from the mother. If you're successful once, you'll have many to choose from for your next aquascape. (There's a reason why Cryptocoryne collectors exist!)
